It’s Hard for a Rich Person to Make Heaven… What the Rich, Young Ruler Didn’t Know

Any money you’re making that makes you focus on enjoyment and forget eternity, be very careful.

The crowd’s murmuring stilled. Everyone stared in disbelief as the young man made his way toward the front of the circle of onlookers. His clothes were made of rich material and royal colors. His hair was cut in the latest fashion. His stride was confident. The rings on his fingers and jewels on his collar glistened in the sun’s rays.

He was not one to mingle with the common folk of the village. His time was spent with the highly educated and the prosperous. He was popular. He was religious. He was rich. He had everything that anybody would wish for. Or did he?

There was one thing missing…

In his heart, this rich young man felt the need for something more. Something deeper. He had heard of a man called Jesus who offered what he was seeking. So he strapped on his richly embroidered camel skin sandals and started off to find this teacher. He found this carpenter called Jesus surrounded by a diverse crowd made up of tax collectors, merchants, housewives, children, and students. The rich young man asked Him a question.

“Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”

Jesus replied, “If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”

Surely there must be more to it that that! The man replied, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?”

Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

You could have heard a pin drop. The young man stared at Jesus for a moment, then dropped his eyes to the ground as his heart sank. He could afford good deeds—a donation here, a loaf of bread to an orphan there. He avoided lying, stealing, and cheating. That cost him nothing.

But to give everything away? To sell all his stuff? Was Jesus crazy? How could He even say such a thing? What would people say?

His thoughts crashed around inside his head, and finally he raised his eyes, suddenly full of sorrow. There was sorrow in the eyes of the Teacher, too. Sorrow mixed with hope. But the rich young man stood for only a moment longer staring into those eyes, then turned away, moving slowly through the crowd, climbed into his dazzling chariot, and rode away, his rich red cloak flapping in the wind.

Keeping Eternity in Mind
The rich young man was so caught up in being happy and fulfilled in the moment that he missed the chance to be happy and fulfilled for eternity. The idea of letting go of his earthly treasure was so awful to him, he chose temporary pleasure instead of everlasting perfection.

It’s easy to look at this story and only see the rich young man—to convince ourselves it doesn’t have much to do with us. But let’s choose to slip into his camel-skinned sandals and walk a mile or two.

When we make a choice today (whether to listen to certain music, eat the fifth donut, or sign up for that class), it affects our future. What we do now makes a difference later on. Are the decisions we’re making eternity-focused or are they based on pleasure in the moment?

It’s easy to get caught up in the heat and pressure of the moment, but when we keep an eternal perspective, our choices won’t be based on the way we feel right now, but on the eternal view of things. So let’s learn from that rich young man. Let’s not get all tied up in the pleasures of the culture that we miss the opportunity to have happiness and fulfillment through Jesus for eternity.

Can you think of a time you lost your eternal perspective? How have you been able to stay eternity-minded? I’d love to hear your comments!

PS: This story comes from Matthew 19:16-22, but the Bible doesn’t tell us exactly what happened step by step, so this is my idea of what could have happened, using imagination for the small details.

5 Easy Ways To Know A Fake Smartphone

A major problem that many top phone manufacturers are encountering is the cloning of their brands. This trend continues despite the painstaking efforts to make cloning difficult. Despite this, the counterfeiters are having a field day faking these brands and it has made it hard for users to differentiate between counterfeit and original phones.

Jumia Travel shares tips for identifying a fake device.

Packaging
Manufacturers of counterfeit products are sometimes careless with packaging. Phone makers will always take care of the smallest details of design and packaging of their own goods. So, take a close look at the package, paying attention to the print quality ensuring consistency. In addition, ensure nothing should be loose inside.

Look at the wires and plugs
The quality of the wire is an important sign of a counterfeit product. If it is original, a plugged-in cable will sit firmly and evenly, while in a fake, you will see loose parts.

Check the user manual
The user manual is one of the easiest ways to identify a fake gadget. Every relevant information about the device must be there in the language of the country of purchase. If it’s written in some other language and you cannot read it, then it is a cloned brand.

Look at the fonts
All fonts and symbols on the gadgets must be similar, readable and regular. If this is not the case, it means the phone is fake or counterfeit.

Pay attention to the material
The material used for making a phone can either be high or low-quality. Popular brands don’t cut back on materials. The plastic covering the phone must be smooth, without any creases.

Fulani Herdsmen Attack Olu Falae’s Farm Again, Destroy Multi-million Naira Crops

Some suspected Fulani herdsmen on Monday attacked the farm of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, at Ilado village in the Akure North area of Ondo State, destroying crops said to be worth millions of naira.

The Publicity Secretary of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, disclosed this to journalists in Akure after the monthly meeting of the association, held at the residence of the leader of the group, Chief Reuben Fasoranti on Tuesday.

The Personal Assistant to Chief Falae, Captain Moshood Raji (rtd.) confirmed the incident, saying many crops were destroyed. He added that it was the police escorts of the elder statesman who shot continuously into the air that sent the herdsmen out of the farm.

Raji said, “They attacked baba’s (Falae’s) farm and destroyed the crops there but immediately we reported to the police.”

Odumakin, who read the communique of the group to journalists accused the Federal Government of showing no concern at the incessant attacks of the Fulani herdsmen on the people of the South-West and Middle- Belt of the country.

He said, “ We are worried about the renewed onslaught of Fulani herdsmen in Yorubaland. Recently, a Permanent Secretary of Osun origin, Mrs. Funke Kolawole was killed on Okene-Lokoja road on her way to Abuja.

“Also, another 72-year -old woman was recently gang- r*ped in Odigbo area of Ondo State and the hoodlums are yet to be brought to book and of course Chief Olu Falaye whose farm has become a source of attacks by the Fulani herdsmen, only yesterday (Monday) came under a renewed attack with policemen on his farm shot at by these Fulani herdsmen.

“We are aggrieved that the Federal Government has continued to turn the other eye while the herdsmen continue their unlawful activities over the country, especially the southern Nigeria and middle belt.”

The association called on the governors of the South-West to emulate the Ekiti State Government and ensure that they put in place appropriate laws to deal with the activities of the herdsmen in the region.

Nigerian Fraudster Jailed for Defrauding US Firm of Millions of Dollars

30-year-old Nigerian, Amechi Colvis Amuegbunam, has been sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in prison in a sophisticated fraud scheme that cost banks and other businesses millions of dollars.

The overnight big boy was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

Amuegbunam pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

He has been in custody since his arrest in Baltimore in August 2015.

According to the statement released by U.S. attorney’s office in Dallas, the suspect duped at least 10 victims and resulted in losses of about $3.7 million.

Amuegbunam has also been ordered to pay $615,555 in restitution. From November 2013 through August 2015, Amuegbunam and others, sent fraudulent emails to companies in North Texas and elsewhere including Luminant, Wells Fargo and J.P. Morgan Chase.

The emails were designed to look like a forwarded message, supposedly from a top executive at the company, sent to an employee in the firm’s accounting department who had authority to make financial transfers, the news release said.

The investigation began when two businesses reported to the Dallas FBI office that they had received targeted spear phishing emails. Although the emails appeared to be coming from a company executive, the messages were actually coming from a fake email account.

The fraudulent domain name contained one small difference from the company’s true email address, such as transposed letters. Investigation eventually traced the creation of some of the documents to Amuegbunam.

The FBI has been tracking what they now call business email compromise, or BEC schemes, since 2013. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), between January 2015 and December 2016, there was a 2,370% increase in identified exposed losses.

Such scams have led to losses totaling more than $5 billion.
