Some Interesting Facts About Nigeria You Should Know

1. The Walls of Benin (800-1400AD), in present day Edo State, are the longest ancient earthworks in the world, and probably the largest man-made structure on earth. They enclose 6500 square kilometers of community lands that connected about 500 communities. At over 16000km long, it was thought to be twice the length of the Great Wall of China, until it was announced in 2012 (after five years of meticulous measurement by Chinese surveyors) that the Great Wall is about 21,000km long.

2. The Yoruba tribe has the highest rate of twin births in the world. Igbo-Ora, a little town in Oyo state, has been nicknamed Twin capital of the World because of its unusually high rate of twins that is put as high as 158 twins per 1000 births.

In a video centred on twin births in Igbo-Ora, one of the locals boasted that every family in the town has at least one twin!

3. Africa’s oldest known boat is The Dufuna canoe which was discovered in Dufuna village, Yobe state, by a Fulani Herdsman in May 1987, while he dug a well. Various radio-carbon tests conducted in laboratories of reputable universities in Europe and America indicate that the canoe is over 8,000 years old, thus making it the oldest in Africa and 3rd oldest in the world. The discovery of the canoe has completely changed accepted theories of the history and sophistication of marine technology in Africa.

4. The Anambra waxbill, a small bird of many beautiful colours, is found only in Southern Nigeria and nowhere else on earth.

5. The Jos Plateau Indigobird, a small reddish-brown bird, is found nowhere else on the planet but Plateau state, Nigeria.

Deadly Kidnapper "Pilot" Who Killed A Woman, Escapes From Police Custody

One of the suspects who allegedly kidnapped, killed and buried an elderly woman, Catherine Okorie in Ishiagu, Ivo area of Ebonyi state has allegedly escaped from police custody in Abakaliki.

Madam Catherine hailed from Ishiagu and was kidnapped in her residence on January 18, 2017.

Recall rhat her abductors killed her four days later and buried her in a shallow grave located in a forest bordering Lokpanta in Umunneochi and Awgu council areas of Abia and Enugu States respectively, for reportedly recognizing one of them.

According to New Telegraph, the suspect whose name was given by the police as Ogonna Alioka alias Pilot when he was paraded alongside other suspected criminals in August 8, 2017, allegedly escaped on the night of 22nd October 2017.

This was disclosed to reporters in Abakaliki by the son of the deceased, Mr Ikechukwu Okorie, in his residence in Abakaliki.

The visibly angry son said although he was yet to be briefed officially by the police, the intelligence information available to him was that the suspect was no longer in the police cell.

“Do you know the one that is paining us?” he angrily queried. “We spent our money and other resources; we funded the expeditions and this thing happened on January 18 and she was killed on 22nd of the same January.

“By July 31, 2017, we caught the man that drove the vehicle to my compound the day they kidnapped my mother.

“God delivered him into our hand. My brother do you know what we are hearing? That Mr Ogonna Alioka that we know how much we spent for him to be caught since 31st July 2017 has disappeared from the cell they kept him. They said this man disappeared from the police cell last Sunday being 22nd October 2017.

“Where do they tell that kind of nonsense? And this is a man that has given a foundation-shaking confessional statement. Our lawyers mounted pressure on the police to arraign this man in court since 31st July. This is October but they are yet to do that.

“They kept dig-dallying only for us to hear from the back door that he is no longer there. However they did it; whatever caused them to release the person that went, kidnapped and shot our mother dead and they would not arraign the person. However the person disappeared, I am sure that Ebonyi State Police Command is joking. It’s a joke of the century” he thundered.

He alleged that a prominent politician from Ishiagu community [names withheld] who he alleged had a hand in the fate of his mother has been making efforts to close up the matter.

When contacted on phone, the Commissioner of Police, Titus Lamorde, referred our correspondent to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Loveth Odah.

However, all calls and sms to her were neither answered nor replied two hours before this report.

New SGF Speaks: "We Must Not Disappoint Nigerians"

The new Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on Tuesday said Nigerians all over the country expected so much from the present administration.

He said since they freely gave the Buhari-led administration their mandate having campaigned to them, government officials must ensure they did not disappoint Nigerians.

Mustapha, who was appointed on Monday as a replacement for Mr. Babachir Lawal, said these in an interview with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said, “We went round and campaigned and sought for their (Nigerians’) mandate; freely they gave us and it behoves on us charged with responsibilities to ensure that we do not disappoint them.

“The expectations are great out there. You live with families and you know the expectations of families. You live in communities, you know the expectations of those communities. You live in geographical jurisdictions and you know the expectations of those people.

“But we have come at a time when the resources are very very lean, in some cases not available but I believe with prudent management as being put in place by Mr. President, we will be able to navigate this very difficult terrain and at the end of the day, every Nigerian will have a smile on his face.”

Mustapha said although the present administration was not promising Nigerians heaven on earth, it could move them from “the current state of squalour in which they were, to a state where there would be hope and expectations.”

He said if there was hope that things would be better, Nigerians as understanding people would continue to give the government the kind of support that was required to push the nation ahead.

The SGF said he would take his oath of office before telling what Nigerians should expect from him.
