Lucky Boy Comes Back To Life A Day Before Doctors Turned Off His Life Support

Miracle! This 13-year-old boy opened his eyes a day before doctors were due to turn off his life support machine, Metro UK reports.

Trenton McKinley’s parents had just signed papers to have their son’s organs donated after he suffered a severe brain trauma.

He suffered a severe brain injury two months ago when the car he was in was flipped over in a crash. The teenager, from Alabama, suffered seven skull fractures and has been in hospital ever since.

‘I hit the concrete and the trailer landed on top of my head. After that, I don’t remember anything,’ Trenton told Fox 10.

His parents were told by doctors that their son ‘would never be normal again’.

‘All I saw was a stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,’ Trenton’s mother, Jennifer Reindl, said.

‘When he came back, they said he would never be normal again. They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.’

Trenton was barely breathing in the days following the crash and his mum made the heartbreaking decision to sign papers to donate his organs.

‘Five kids needed organs that matched him,’ Jennifer said. ‘It was unfair to keep bringing him back, because it was just damaging his organs even more.’

A day before doctors were going to take Trenton off of life support, the 13-year-old began showing signs of brain activity and movement.

He started breathing on his own and in late March, he woke up speaking full sentences, his mother wrote on a Facebook fundraising page. Trenton still has a long road to recovery and has had surgery on his brain three times already.

He will need another operation to reconnect a missing piece of his skull, his mother wrote online.

Trenton said he believes he went to heaven before he came back to life.

‘I was in an open field walking straight,’ Trenton said. ‘There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way. Even doctors said it.’

VP Osinbajo Fires Back: Releases Details Of Grand Corruption Under Jonathan

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s office has revealed details of mind-boggling corruption during the Goodluck Jonathan era and even called them a tip of the iceberg.

The details were released in a reaction to the accusations by pals of former President Jonathan, who claimed Osinbajo made unsubstantiated allegations about grand corruption during the Jonathan era…

The statement by senior special assistant on media, Laolu Akande, said the Vice President did not at anytime accuse Jonathan in person, but only said the blatant corruption cases were committed during his presidency.

The full statement:

“WE have read reports attributed to “a media office of former President Goodluck Jonathan”. It is clear from the foul language of the authors that the statement could not have come from the former President, but from the motley group of loud and rude characters whose brief seems to be to deny all and anything said against the former PDP government and to do so in the crassest possible language.

The alleged spokespersons of the former President say that facts long in the public domain, some even being used to prosecute several corruption cases are lies and that those of us in government restating these well known facts are liars.

They accuse Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, of lying against the former President or his government citing their involvement in the stealing of three billion dollars, while speaking recently at The Platform event on the 1st of May.

Just for clarity, I quote the Vice President “Grand corruption remains the most enduring threat to our economy. Three Billion US dollars was stolen in what was called the strategic alliance contacts in 2013, three Nigerians were responsible, today three billion dollars is one trillion Naira and our budget is 7trillion! ….”

Two issues emerge. First, no mention is made of the former President.

Second, the story is not only true, it has been in the public domain for almost three years and it is the subject of criminal investigation and trials both here and in the UK.

The spokespersons also say that the allegations of corruption against the PDP government are mere lies. For clarity, the facts are laid out as follows:

As the Vice President said, $3B was stolen in the so- called NNPC Strategic Alliance Contracts. The three persons involved are Jide Omokore, Kola Aluko and the former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison- Maduekwe. The companies of both Jide Omokore and Kola Aluko lifted Nigerian crude oil and kept the proceeds. The total sums converted is in excess of three billion dollars including royalties, taxes and fees unpaid for the asset from which the crude was taken. The case is the subject of a trial in Nigeria, and criminal investigation in the US and UK, and the assets of all three individuals have been forfeited in Nigeria, the US and the UK.

The criminal diversion and theft of sums in excess of $2.5 billion meant for purchase of arms to prosecute the war against Boko Haram: The first phase of the investigations revealed several sordid details, many of the assets of culprits have been seized from them and they are facing trial.

The release of the sum of $289m in cash on February 25, 2015: Documents including cash vouchers indicate that the the sum of $289,202,382 was taken from the Joint Venture (JV) Cash Call Account No. 000-0000-11658-366 of the NNPC/NAPIMS with JP Morgan Chase Bank, New York, USA.

N70 billion was released in parts from the national treasury between January 8 and February 25, 2015.

In another illegal disbursement, 25th August 2014, N60B in cash in tranches of N40billion and N20billion: The sum was not tied to any project or procurement and was then shared between two security agencies under the supervision of the then NSA. Most of these sums ended up in the hands of senior PDP members some of whom have returned parts of the loot. Some are standing trial for these offenses. These facts are in the public domain.

There was yet another set of illegal fund withdrawals under one week between January 8and 16, 2015, where the sum of N1.5 billion was released in three tranches of N300m, N400m and N800m respectively. This money was released from the MEA Research Library Account

Another document showed that N10 billion was released to the Office of the National Security Adviser by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on September 15, 2014. The money was released in tranches of foreign exchange of $47 million, $5 million, 4 million Euros and 1.6 million Euros. A letter from the Office of the NSA in November 2014 further showed that the monies were released as ‘funds for special services’. This particular release of N10B was sourced in November 2014 from a N40 Billion CBN released funds meant for Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR. Investigators showed that this money was released for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

Lamido Sanusi, then CBN Governor was sacked for speaking up about the over $20billion missing from oil proceeds.

These cases of grand corruption and open looting of public resources pauperized Nigeria and left us with little or no savings in the years when oil was selling at 100 to 114 dollars a barrel and we were producing 2.1 million barrels a day. When in 2015 oil prices went even as low as between 28 and 35 dollars a barrel and oil production fell to less than one million barrels a day we had no buffer, no savings, to tide us through.

The amount released from CBN in cash on a single day, ie the US$289M ( N88.1Bn) is enough to fund 244,000 N-Power graduates for a year, or pay for 1.2Billion school meals or complete half of Lagos -Ibadan or half of Abuja -Kaduna -Kano roads.

The Vice President also made the point that in 2014 with oil prices as high as 120 dollars per barrel, the total capital released for Power, Works, Housing, Defence, Transport, Agriculture and Defence were just N152Billion for the whole year.

By contrast, the Buhari administration committed N578Bn to the same Ministries in 2016 with oil prices as low as US$28 per barrel as part of the strategy to end the recession. The government was able to do more with less by stopping grand corruption and impunity.

Recently, the Minister Coordinating the economy in that administration has written a revealing book : Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines. Who knows, perhaps her stories too are all lies!”

Sad! Stubborn Cab Driver Dies In Accident Minutes After Refusing To Heed Advice In Lagos

A Nigerian man, Ashara Samuel Adekunle Aska has cautioned people on the need to avoid reckless driving after a driver lost his life in a fatal road accident because he refused to heed warning from passengers.

According to Aska, the driver was warned about his reckless driving but he refused to heed to the words of advice leading to his death. The sad story…

“Good morning family and friends in here.

I am writing this article so you all can help me to thank God for spearing my life again. Early hours of yesterday, I was travelling from Abeokuta to Ajah for a business trip and I went to the popular Kuto park to board a car and on getting there the car I saw was full and I was asked to wait for the next turn. When it got to the next turn I rushed to the front of the car to seat because I was the first to get there and eventually I used the seat belt unconsciously and they started calling on passengers so the car can be filled up and we leave, all along I was seated still in the car I didn’t comeout except from the bottle water I bought from a little girl at the park that was all, thereafter the car got filled up and we started moving.

When we got to the front of governors office at Oke mosan it was remaining small for the driver to hit a bike man from behind and I raised an alarm and told him why is he not concentrating and he started arguing with me and the rest passagers joined me to shout at him and he kept quite and not long the driver apologize saying he knows what he’s doing that in fact he has been driving before I was born that I should not be angry after all that he knows what he’s doing that we’ve nothing to fear.

Then we continued our journey, the driver branched to a petrol station he filled up his tank and we faced the journey proper suddenly I noticed he was attending to his phone then he was looking down not facing the front suddenly he faced the front and our car jumped on the culvert diving the car somersaulted 5 times.

At first I didn’t notice it was an accident I thought it was a movie or dream until the car tumbled the third time I notice it was an accident and I started shouting Jesus, eventually the car stopped and I found the driver lifeless in my front then I removed the seat belt and came out of the vehicle if not for the seat belt and God intervention I would have been a gone person.

Out of all passengers in the vehicle I can only see myself and a man as the only survivor in the car with no injury or stuff.

Please family and friends help me thank God for his faithfulness and love over me, if it was a car I bought I know many will be greeting me or if I eventually finished building my house many will also congratulates me.

Please, my family and friends help me thank God for keeping me alive and counting me worthy despite my unfaithfulness, I don’t know where to start from… Pls join me in thanking God… Hallelujah…”

How To Stop Whishing…and Start Living Your Life

Let’s face it, we are busy people. There are always things going on and there are no signs of life slowing down.

Work. Sports. Church. Spouse. Friends. Kids… This ever-growing list is the perfect excuse for not taking action.

I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news first: there is no perfect time. Now some good news: there is no perfect time.

Why is that good news?
Because it frees you from searching for something that doesn’t exist. It removes the excuses you’ve been telling yourself to avoid taking action. It brings honesty front and center and forces you to deal with it.

And you know what else? It’s Biblical. Solomon talks about facing the uncertainties in life in Ecclesiastes.

“Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.”
– Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NIV)

When you wait for everything to line up just so, you’ll be waiting forever. The Living Bible translation puts that same passage this way: “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.”

As a personal trainer, I hear the time excuse maybe more than any other excuse. I get it. We all have a lot going on in life.

Yet just because I understand the excuse doesn’t mean I agree with it. I have a maxim that you may not want to hear: We do the things we most want to do.

If it’s important enough to you, you make time for it. That’s why I don’t ever say, “I don’t have time for _______.” Instead, I’ll say, “I won’t make time for ________.”

The time excuse certainly isn’t limited to fitness. Perhaps you’ve put off daily quiet times because you can’t create the ideal schedule for them. Maybe you’re not having regular date nights with your spouse because the calendar is packed with other stuff. Or maybe you’re not in church regularly because you’re too tired on the weekends from all your activities during the week.

Keep in mind, this is part of the enemy’s strategy, to keep us “busy,” too busy for things that matter most.

He’ll even deceive us into wearing our busyness as a badge of honor. It’s as if activities equals productivity and productivity equals worth.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

We serve the Great Redeemer. Our God is the God who put the hands of time in motion. He has the power to slow the clock on our behalf so that we can honor Him mind, body, and soul.

If you truly want the things you say you want, the things He wants for you, stop watching the wind.

Don’t stare at the sky or wait on the weather.

To reap you must plant.

The day has come.

There is no better time to live life right than to start living it today… by His strength… for His glory.

More Details On Story Of Tenants Flogged By "Soldiers Hired’ By Lagos Landlord

Some soldiers, who were reportedly acting on the orders of a Lagos landlord, on Saturday allegedly tortured an asthmatic patient on Lekki Palm City Estate, Ajah, Lagos State.

It was learnt that the soldiers, who were five in number, stormed the estate with the landlord and an agent after a disagreement…

The soldiers were said to have flogged a tenant, identified only as Ayoyemi and his younger brother, till the latter passed out.

The victim, who was reported to be asthmatic, was rushed to a hospital where he was allegedly stabilised.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said trouble started after Ayoyemi, a nurse, moved into the house in March 2018.

He said, “The tenant needed an apartment and went on an online advert platform where he got the contact of the agent, called Dominic. The agent informed him that the apartment available was N1.3m per annum.

“Ayoyemi paid N1m, including N100,000 agency fee. He later paid an additional N250,000, remaining N50,000, which he promised to pay later.

“After all the payments, the agent told him that the landlord would like to speak to him on the telephone. The landlord said he did not want young men in the apartment. Ayoyemi was angry that he was just telling him after he had paid. He asked for a refund, but the landlord refused.

“Last week Saturday, some policemen barged into the house and claimed that they came from Alagbon with a petition to search the room. They saw a laptop in Ayoyemi’s room and asked what he was doing with it. He unlocked the laptop for them and after the search, they did not find anything incriminating.”

The resident said on Thursday, the agent came to the house and Ayoyemi challenged him for not picking his calls during the time the policemen visited the house.

He explained that Ayoyemi’s younger brother alleged that the agent and the landlord gave their names (the siblings) to the police.

The unidentified brother was said to have been involved in a scuffle with the agent during which Dominic’s phone fell and the screen was shattered.

The disagreement reportedly made the tenant to decide to quit the apartment and he asked the agent to call the landlord on the spot to communicate his decision to him.

“During the telephone conversation, the landlord said he only gave the tenant’s name to the residents association on the estate. He told Ayoyemi that he would give him a notice to quit the following day.

“Later, the landlord changed his words and said if he wanted to leave he could leave, but he would not refund the rent until he found a new tenant.

“On Friday, while the tenant was away at work, the agent came back to the house with a policeman from the Ajiwe Police Station. The policeman spoke to Ayo on the telephone and said his attention was needed at the station,” he added.

Punch learnt that Ayoyemi promised to honour the invitation.

However, on Saturday, the tenant was reportedly preparing to go out when some soldiers, accompanied by the landlord and agent, allegedly stormed the house.

“Three of the soldiers were in uniform; one wore camouflage trousers and the last one just put on a camouflage cap. The five soldiers did not wear name tags.

“It was the new tenant that they beat up first. When his brother came outside, they beat him up as well. They did not allow them to utter a word. They used belts and AC hose to torture the three of them, including a friend who had visited. But Ayoyemi’s brother was the worst hit. When he collapsed, they asked Ayoyemi to get his inhaler. When the brother could not find it on time, the landlord and the agent dashed into their cars and left.

“The estate Chief Security Officer later reprimanded the landlord for using soldiers and said they could have invited policemen to handle the matter,” the resident said.

Punch gathered that the police at the Ajiwe division later informed Ayoyemi that the agent, Dominic, petitioned the police, saying he was attacked at the house and money was stolen from his bag.

When Punch contacted the nurse on Sunday, he confirmed the incident, but said some landlords on the estate had begged him to let the matter go.

He noted that some friends had also advised him against taking up the case.

Efforts to reach Dominic and the landlord were abortive.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said the police did not have a record of the incident.

Manipulated? Woman Kills Her Mother-in-Law With Pestle

A woman identified as Mrs. Chioma Ibina (45 years) has allegedly killed her mother-in-law identified simply as Mrs. Ibina (75 years) by hitting her on the head with a pestle without any fight…

The ugly incident occurred last Friday night in Ebyia Unuhu in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Narrating the incident before newsmen, the son of the deceased, who is equally the husband of the suspect, Mr. Maduabuchi Ibina, said that some of the family members, on the fateful day, noticed some unusual noise like that of a wheelbarrow at about 12 midnight.

He said that the noise attracted one of his stepmothers, who opened her door to find out what was wrong.

He said, “Neighbours from nearby compound informed her that it was the suspect (Mrs Chioma), who pleaded to use their wheelbarrow that night.

“At that point, one of the neighbours followed my stepmother and they trailed the sound of the wheelbarrow to a point where they sighted Mrs. Chioma displaying suspicious behaviour, which prompted them to question her on what she was doing with a wheelbarrow at 12 midnight.

“They noticed that Chioma’s body was soaked with blood and this gave them more reason to be worried; they then forced themselves into the room and saw my mother in a pool of her own blood with her head crushed with pestle.

He narrated that by the time the stepmother and the neighbour had time to recover from the shock after observing what happened, the suspect (Chioma) had escaped.

Mr. Maduabuchi wondered why his wife would indulge in such a dastardly act as there was no misunderstanding between his mother and her.

“I was not in the house that fateful night the incident occurred; I attended a burial in the village and returned in the morning to learn of this development.

“The next place I saw my wife was at Nkwegu Police Station where she narrated how she committed the crime, attributing it to the handwork of the devil.”

Maduabuchi further disclosed that his wife cried profusely at the Police Station stating that she was hypnotised while she slept, leading to her picking up a pestle and hitting the mother-in-law twice in her room.

He continued, “My wife told us that the same spirit directed her to carry wheelbarrow, which she did before family members came to the scene.”

When contacted, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Lovet Odah, confirmed the incident to Punch, stating that the suspect has been arrested and was now in police custody.

Three others were also said to have been injured, while one of the two vehicles involved in the crash, which happened around 8.30am, was burnt.

It was learnt that the cadets were on holidays and travelling to their respective destinations when a Golf car ran into a bus conveying them.

It was gathered by The Punch that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and some policemen rescued the survivors and took them to St Lukes Hospital, Wusasa, Zaria.

A colleague of the deceased, Suhail Saulawa, shared the tragic news on his Twitter handle, @cadet_suhail.

One of the deceased, according to his name tag, was identified as A.M. Bello, while Saulawa gave the names of three others simply as Ayisha, Dabiri and Yamad.

He stated that Dabiri posted on Instagram a few hours before the incident, lamenting that the deceased was an advocate of better policing in the country.

He wrote, “Surely, every soul shall taste the bitterness of death. Today (Sunday), we lost four of our junior cadets on their way back home on break, along Kano-Zaria Expressway.

“Dari, a highly reformed gentleman officer; his dream for better policing will never go in vain. We will continue from where you stopped #RIP, my gentle and loyal boy. See you in a better place.

“At About 22:30hrs (10pm on Saturday), late Dari passed by me while he was dashing and late Yamad was the man of the match in yesterday’s (Saturday) football match. But that’s the irony of life; may Allah forgive them all. RIP.”

In another tweet update on the incident, Saulawa put the number of the deceased policemen at five.

“We have lost the fifth cadet; may Allah bless and forgive his gentle soul,” he tweeted.

The Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, who confirmed the crash, said the corpses of the victims had been handed over to their families.

He said the corps received a distress call at 8.40am and mobilised its men to the scene immediately, adding that nine persons were involved in the crash.

He said, “The accident was caused by speed violation; while two vehicles – a Ford transit white bus with the number plate, KMC 274 YW, and a black Volkswagen Golf – were involved. The number plate of the Golf car could not be ascertained because the whole vehicle was burnt.

“Nine people (eight males and a female) were involved. While three males were injured, six persons – five males and a female – died. Five of the deceased were policemen. The injured victims were taken to St Lukes Hospital, Wusasa, Zaria, and the dead bodies were handed over to the relatives.”

“The IG has equally directed a full scale investigation into the accident and the Kaduna State Police Command is doing so. They were on holidays; a J5 car ran into a vehicle they were travelling in.”

"Babangida Sacked Me Seven Days To My Wedding"

A former General Manager of the Plateau State Publishing Corporation, Jonathan Ishaku, has recalled how, as former Editor of The Nigerian Standard in 1985, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, popularly known as IBB, sacked him in 1985 for being very critical of his administration seven days to his wedding.

Ishaku told Punch, “The story of my sacking by IBB was a very long one. It was a struggle between the then military government and the agitation for democracy, press freedom, journalism and human rights.

“We weren’t at fault; the military felt that we were exposing them too much and we shouldn’t have been exposing them. That was seven days before my wedding and the wedding still went ahead because we felt that we would give them too much joy to postpone it. He wanted to deny me of my wedding, but I continued with my plans.

“They felt that we shouldn’t have written what we were writing, especially editorials and news reports that were so critical of some of the atrocities of the military. They claimed to come to correct the past errors of the civilians but ended up doing worse things.

“We were not happy with IBB in our editorials, especially when IBB said he was going to restore freedom, after toppling the administration of then Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. He came, was criticised for some of his policies. IBB didn’t accept it; we wrote an editorial in support of the position being canvassed by the managing directors of some banks concerning his economic policies. Before this, IBB had already sacked those bank MDs. We affirmed their freedom to speak; IBB therefore slammed a dismissal on us.”

Ishaku, who later became Editor of The Champion Newspapers, said IBB felt that The Nigerian Standard was speaking the minds of some top military officers from the Middle Belt “who may be plotting a coup against him and who may be using the mouthpiece of the Middle Belt.”

“That was why he was very sensitive to whatever Nigerian Standard Newspapers wrote. In fact, he insulted his Chief Press Secretary, Duro Onabule, and gave a stern directive that whenever Nigerian Standard arrives, it should be one of the first newspapers he should see and read.

“That was after we wrote an editorial criticising his wife, the late Maryam Abacha, for sewing a dress which portrayed his (IBB’s) pictures. We told her that she shouldn’t model her husband for us because if Nigerians wanted her husband to continue to lead as President, it should be done through the democratic means,” he said.

He said although The Nigerian Standard was in northern Nigeria, it had a lot of influence and was being reviewed every morning on The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

PDP Replies Osinbajo: You’re A Product Of Corruption

The Peoples Democratic Party has accused Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) of being a beneficiary of corruption.

It said that Nigerians, particularly the younger generation, were thoroughly disappointed in Osinbajo for allegedly allowing himself to be used to divert public attention from what it called the failures of the APC government.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, that as “a professor of Law, and an occupant of the exalted seat of the Vice-President of our country, Osinbajo should know better than allowing himself to be used to bandy figures and make unguarded statements at public events.”

He cited the comment made by Osinbajo at the APC ward congress in Lagos on Saturday, where he allegedly described everyone else as “thieves.”

Osinbajo had claimed at the congress that unlike its predecessors, the present government would not steal government money.

Ologbondiyan alleged that the Vice-President had refused to bring honour to his office with his utterances.

He said, “We note that Vice-President Osinbajo has refused to heed wise counsel and accord respect to his office by desisting from such unguarded comments only because he has been sucked in and entangled in the propaganda, deception, impunity and sleaze that not only brought the administration to power, but have become its trademark in the last three years.

“We specifically invite Nigerians to note that all the assertions by the Vice-President, especially on the performance of the Buhari administration as well as his allegations and bandying of figures against the opposition, have remained unsubstantiated.

“Moreover, Nigerians have noted that Prof. Osinbajo, in his ‘sanctimony,’ has been silent on the exposed corruption under the Buhari administration, including the leaked memo detailing N9tn corrupt oil contracts at the NNPC, exposed sleaze in oil subsidy deals, diversion of Internally Displaced Persons’ intervention funds.

“These include the probe of a misappropriated N18bn in the National Emergency Management Agency under his direct supervision as well as other looting in government agencies such as the National Health Insurance Scheme.

“The Vice-President is also ominously silent about the prevailing high-handedness and human rights violations and the aloofness of government resulting in daily bloodletting in various parts of our country.”

Ologbondiyan urged Osinbajo to take heed, retreat to the inner room, and conduct a soul searching.

Our Pains Over Non-passage Of 2018 Budget

These are not the best of times for real sector operators, particularly manufacturers. For a sector struggling to bounce back after a debilitating recession forced it on its knees, the delay in the passage of the N8.6 trillion 2018 Appropriation Bill by the National Assembly (NASS) may have added to its litany of woes.

Not a few operators who spoke with The Nation lamented that the delay in the passage of the budget has naturally slowed down economic activities. To them, critical business decisions have been put on hold. Some of them believed key capital/infrastructure projects would be delayed or abandoned.

The Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr. Muda Yusuf, said the delay in the budgetary process would entrench the vicious cycle of poor budget implementation.

On the likely effect of the budget delay on its implementation, especially its capital component, Yusuf said: “The risk is that recurrent spending will be fully implemented while capital projects suffer the usual implementation deficiency.”

Strategic planning, for many organisations, takes a cue from the budget structure and the policies that come with it.

The National Assembly reneged on its promise to pass the N8.6 trillion 2018 Appropriation Bill on April 24, 2018. The “Budget of Consolidation”proposal was on November 7, last year, presented for consideration and approval to the joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari. But, the executive and the legislature have been trading blame for the delay in its passage. The chambers again raised the hopes of operators and Nigerians that the budget will be passed this week

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Publicity, Abdulrasak Namdas, told reporters in Abuja: “By the grace of God, we will lay the budget on Tuesday (tomorrow) and then try to pass it that same week. Actually, we’ve been working hard so that we can beat the deadline, and hopefully this time around, I can assure you that by next week (this week), everything about the budget will be concluded and passed.”

His assurance followed that of the Senate spokesman, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

If both chambers make good their promises this time, it means that the implementation of the budget will begin five months into the fiscal year.

The delay, according to Yusuf, has implications for planning in both the public and private sectors of the economy.

“To the extent that the budget is not in place, uncertainty and associated business risks are heightened,” the LCCI chief said, adding “this is surely not good for investors’ confidence, either from a foreign investor’s perspective, or from domestic investor’s standpoint.

Equally worried is the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). Its President Frank Udemba Jacobs said: “As a key player in the real sector of the economy, MAN can boldly say that the delay in passage of the budget would have dire consequences on the economy.

“This is chiefly because the delay in the passage of the budget would make implementation of the capital expenditure component of the budget for the year an uphill task and these capital expenditure components are needed for sustainable economic growth as against our present growth rate that is premised on improved oil production and increase in crude oil prices in the international market.”

He described the annual budget as a vital compass expected to give stakeholders in the economy information on the likely flow of the economy as well as income and expenditure in a given year.

He also said the budget is a strategic indicator that helps domestic and foreign investors and businesses to plan their economic activities, decisions, projects and expenditures for the year.

Dr. Jacobs, therefore, said that the late passage of the budget slows down economic activities.

He said: “Critical to the private sector is the expectation that the budget shows the direction the government aims to take for the year in terms of provision of incentives, infrastructure development needed for the smooth operation of businesses and procurement of goods and services.”

The MAN chief pointed out that the delay would negatively affect the job creation capacity of government contractors.

Those job losses, he added, would worsen the purchasing power of the populace, with its resultant effect on the economy and the manufacturing sector in particular.

Stating that the delay has dire consequences for the economy generally, he said: “For an economy such as Nigeria, a budget is more than just a plan; it a fiscal tool that has been empirically used for the development and growth of economies in many other climes.

“In fact, national budget provides the link between public sector activities and that of the private sector needed for the growth of the economy. Taking the budget expenditure angle for instance, through public procurement for government capital projects, particularly locally-made products, the entire sectors will be stimulated as liquidity expands.

“Expansion in these activities stimulates growth and development in terms of employment creation and poverty reduction.

“Early passage of national budget therefore ensures early commencement of implementation and full-blown economic activities.

“Conversely, the late passage of the budget as we are witnessing in Nigeria at the moment causes sluggishness in the economy, which affects all economic actors and agents negatively.”

The non-passage of the 2018 budget is affecting sales of goods in warehouses of many manufacturing firms. Since the budget is yet to be passed, there has been no money in circulation, leading to low purchasing power of Nigerians.

With lots of unsold goods, manufacturers are hurting. Their production targets have been disrupted.

The MAN president said: “What the National Assembly is doing presently by not finishing up with the 2018 budget is causing a major challenge to the economy because the disposable income is not there for Nigerians to spend at will.

“It is only when this budget is passed and implementation begins that the public will have money to spend freely. As long as they don’t have money to spend freely, the manufacturing sector will continue to have large stock of unsold inventory of goods and these could decay and be at production risk.”

Jacobs also expressed worries over the proposed budgetary deficit of N2.22 billion, which the government intends to finance to the tune of about 42.4 per cent from domestic borrowing.

According to him, this would crowd out private sector borrowing, particularly the manufacturing sector.

Jacobs argued that with debt service charges rising to N2.014 trillion, accounting for 24.7 per cent of the 2018 budget, this portends imminent danger. Besides, high debt profile, he said, leads to debt over-hang, which discourages investment, particularly foreign investment.

the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) warned of the dangers in delayed passage of the budget was dangerous for the economy.

Conveying NECA’s concern at the end of its recent Governing Council meeting in Lagos, its President Larry Ettah said the development could drag the nation into a state of inertia.

He said: “It appears to have become a tradition in this democratic dispensation for the budget to be unduly delayed, thereby plunging the economy into a state of inertia, particularly in the first quarter of the year.”

He recalled that in December 2016, the President presented the Appropriation Bill for last year to the National Assembly, but lamented that the lawmakers did not pass the bill until May 11, 2017, almost six months after it was presented.

Ettah, also recollected that the President presented the 2018 budget to the legislators in November 2017 and expressed dismay that the budget is yet to be passed.

He implored the two arms of government to mutually agree on a time frame that would ensure that the budget for the following year is passed into law before the end of every current fiscal year.

The Nation learnt that the delay in the passage of the budget was caused by the alleged refusal of heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), to appear before the chambers to defend their votes.

The refusal, or late appearance of some heads of MDAs was said to have made the sub-committees of both chambers to also submit their budget reports late to the Appropriation Committees.

By Tuesday last week, when the National Assembly failed to pass the document as promised, reports of sub-committees were reportedly still being collated by the Appropriation Committees for onward submission to the Senate and House in plenary for passage into law.

But, Jacobs blamed the delay on administrative challenges, saying: “From all indications, it appears that the reason for the delay of passage of the 2018 budget is due to administrative challenges.”

According to him, economic activities have been dampened and the private sector that grows the economy in real terms could not find any impetus and direction, which the government is supposed to provide through the passage of the budget.

On the efforts made by the manufacturers to end the cycle, Jacobs stated that in various representations, MAN has always advised the government to begin early budget preparation in the preceding year.

He said in doing that, all administrative hiccups would have been resolved early before the current year.

“I hope the National Assembly and the Presidency quickly resolve the current quagmire and move on to pass the 2018 budget,” he said.

NLC President Ayuba Wabba blamed the delay on lack of synergy between the executive and the National Assembly. He called on the executive and the legislature to expedite action to pass the budget.

Pointing out the implication of the long, Wabba noted that the implication of not passing the budget five months into the year translates to delay in delivering on infrastructure development and dividends of democracy.

The unionist said: “Based on facts in the public domain, the position of both arms of government was wrong-headed and does not warrant holding the nation to ransom.

“We find it rather unwarranted to play politics with such issue and refuse to carry out their statutory functions. We call on the Senate and the Federal Government to bury their hatchet to expedite the passage of the budget.”

According to Wabba, there must be synergy in the work of the three arms of government through meaningful consultations, constant communication and collaboration for the common good of the people.

Echoing the labour leader, Yusuf said: ”They need to be on the same page with regard to the fundamental principles of the budget.”

The LCCI the boundaries of responsibilities between the executive and the legislature in budgetary appropriations should be clearly defined to avoid the recurring problem of delays.

Noting that the ruling party has a role to play in this matter, especially when it has the majority in the legislature, he added that a judicial pronouncement is necessary to lay the matter to rest.

He said: “It is important as well for all arms of government to demonstrate an unmistakeable commitment to the spirit and letters of the Nigerian constitution and other complementary legislations.

“It is worrisome that many agencies of government are not complying with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

“Compliance with this Act would improve the budget process and enhance the capacity of the NASS to discharge its responsibilities with regard to the appropriation,” Yusuf told The Nation.

The Federal Government had in 2017, made a commitment to an early submission of the 2018 Appropriation Bill for early passage before the end of 2017. The idea was to return the nation’s budget cycle to the regular January-December.

Subsequently, the 2018 budget, which was put at N8.612 trillion, was presented to the National Assembly by President Buhari on November 7, 2017.

But five months into the year, the budget is yet to be passed, as lawmakers accuse the executive of refusing to submit the 2018 Finance Bill, which it said traditionally accompanies the budget proposal.

The parliament was said to have requested the submission of the finance bill as part of its working tools, saying that it was necessary as it guards against revenue leakages and inconsistency in government fiscal policy.

As it is, the controversy over submission of the 2018 budget and budget defence by ministers and directors has continued to hold the nation to ransom, with predictable consequences for businesses and the economy.

The situation, according to experts, is hurting the country’s quest for both local and foreign investors.

Because budget approval and implementation are critical to investment decisions and enhanced economic activities, experts believe that the nation’s recovery from recession on a sustainable would have been accelerated had the 2018 budget been passed on time.

14 Notorious Traffic Robbers Arrested In Lagos

Officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) have arrested 14 suspected traffic robbers on the Marina in Lagos.

The suspects were apprehended during an operation codenamed, Jedi-Jedi, which was initiated to rid the axis of miscreants, who waylay motorists at night.

According to the agency’s Chairman, Israel Ajao, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), LNSC had received complaints that motorists were usually robbed at that axis at night, especially by the State House on the Marina.

He said LNSC officials went undercover and pretended as motorists, whose vehicles broke down.

“Over 100 officers were deployed in decoy raid. Some were inside vehicles, which seemed to have broken down. As soon as the urchins saw the broken down vehicles, they went after them in a bid to rob the occupants.

“Fourteen of them were pursued and arrested. Some weapons recovered. They have been handed over to the task force for further action. Some of our officers sustained minor injuries. This operation was successful because of the quality of intelligence received from the public.

“People should have confidence in giving us information and we would rout out all criminals from all the nooks and crannies of Lagos State.”

Rampaging Bandits Kill Over 45 People In Kaduna

Barely three days after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris visited Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State over the spate of killngs, bandits at the weekend killed over 45 people, including women and children.

Condemning the attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai said the Federal Government’s plan to establish an Army battalion in Birnin-Gwari would soon be implemented.

During his visit, the IG ordered immediate deployment of additional 200 policemen in the area.

The bandits stormed Gwaska village around 2:30pm on Saturday, killing 45 people and setting many houses ablaze.

Kaduna State Police Commissioner Austin Iwar, in a telephone interview with The Nation, confirmed the 45 casualty figure.

The CP also confirmed that the incident occurred in Gwaska, a Birnin Gwari village close to Zamfara State.

Members of the Birnin-Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance, who pleaded for anonymity, said the gunmen came in from Zamfara State.

“The armed bandits came from neighbouring Zamfara State and encircled Gwaska up to neighbouring Kuiga village, shooting sporadically,

“Most of those killed are even women and children,” a source said.

“We will continue to appeal to the authorities to take urgent steps to forestall further attacks and extinction of communities in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.”

The source said many people were still missing and that the injured would be evacuated.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai commiserated with Birnin Gwari Emirate over the “fatal” attack.

He said “to contain the situation, the military will be stationing a permanent Army battalion in Birnin-Gwari”.

El-Rufai said he was concerned by the incessant banditry and had been engaging the Federal Government on the matter.

Said the governor: “The Kaduna State Government has received with sadness reports of the murder of our citizens by armed bandits in Birnin Gwari. The government has sent a message of condolence to the people of Birnin Gwari Emirate.

“Kaduna State Government is deeply committed to overcoming the unfortunate criminality and banditry being carried out against innocent citizens in Birnin Gwari Local Government.

“The engagements between the state and federal governments have yielded results. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a permanent battalion of the Nigerian Army in the Birnin Gwari general area.

“The new security arrangements also involve policing. The Inspector General of Police has already announced the creation of the Birnin Gwari Police Area Command and two new Divisional Police Headquarters.

“The State Emergency Management Agency has also been directed to provide relief materials with immediate effect to the affected communities.”

How To Handle Money God’s Way & Prosper

It’s no secret that the Bible teaches us to live our lives a little bit differently than the world does. And that’s especially true when it comes to money.

Practice contentment and don’t covet other people’s stuff, the Bible says (Hebrews 13:5, Exodus 20:17).

But social media make you want the life you see around. You feel incomplete, so you get desperate to “meet up” and sink deep in sin.

Worship God above all else, and don’t worship idols, the Bible tells us (Exodus 20:3–4, Matthew 6:24). But people often make material possessions into gods without even realizing it — especially money.

But Proverbs 21:20 (NIV) explains the value in saving for a rainy day: “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” And even beyond your own household, saving can create financial stability for future generations: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children” (Proverbs 13:22 NKJV).

It’s okay to have some fun with your money—as long as you budget for it, and as long as you pay yourself first by tucking some of your money into savings.

The world says: Spend all of your money on you. There’s no way you’ll have anything left over!
God says: Give 10% off the top and work toward being able to give even beyond that.

Giving isn’t a priority in the world, but it’s a priority to God.

The world says: Debt can be a tool to buy things you couldn’t otherwise have.
God says: Debt is bad.

Over the past several decades, debt has been marketed so heavily that many people feel like they can’t survive without it! In fact, eight in 10 Americans have debt, and seven in 10 believe it’s necessary. But debt has also forced people to delay or avoid expensive life events like marriage or kids, and it’s caused bankruptcy, divorce and all kinds of other messes.

Proverbs 22:7 actually says borrowing money enslaves you to the lender. And in Romans 13:8, Paul calls us to pay off all our debts so that the only thing we owe each other is love.

Seek prayers and the right means to have God’s blessings so you don’t end in hell committing sin because of money.

We’re Not Impressed By Buhari Government – CAN President

Here’s a brief excerpts of the interview the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, had with Punch.

You said President Muhammadu Buhari should forget about his second term bid if security is not improved on? Can you throw more light on this?
If I am not sure I will be safe as it looks now, how do we commit the future into his hands? We don’t vote people because we want them to go and sit down in government. Are they there for a jamboree?

If security issue remains this way, will CAN raise a candidate using a political platform?
We are not politicians in CAN. Christians can decide on their own to contest.

Apart from security, which other areas would you advise the government to improve on?
Infrastructure is number one. There is less supply of electricity. This is the third year of this administration and all we hear are promises. Did the rest of the world get their electricity from heaven? Why has our own not arrive yet? Collapse of our roads is another area.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is 120 kilometres in stretch. The government has been repairing the road for more than three years now. How long will it take to construct longer roads? Most of our roads are death traps and the rail system belongs to the stone age. We need to use modern rail system. Our health care system is another major challenge and that is why those who can afford it like those in government go abroad for treatment.

We have youths that are unemployed too. We need to create jobs but the problem is that investors will not come if there is insecurity. Nobody wants to die in the hands of herdsmen and Boko Haram.

Outside security challenges, are there areas you will commend this administration of Buhari?
I will commend Buhari for at least fighting against corruption physically, but the fight should not be against the opposition alone. It appears that only people in the Peoples Democratic Party are corrupt. Don’t we have corrupt politicians in the All Progressives Congress? It’s a reality that we must face. It must be total.

How Obasanjo Coalition’s Candidate Will Defeat Buhari – Insider

An insider in the CNM and former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has said the Coalition for Nigeria Movement will present a candidate who will defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

He, however, said the group was not formed to either attack the Buhari government or to discredit the APC.

Okupe, in a statement on Saturday, said since it would be difficult to defeat an incumbent, the CNM was created as a broad platform with a view to presenting a candidate who would contest against Buhari with the hope of defeating the incumbent President.

Okupe stated, “It is absolutely impossible to oppose the incumbent especially a towering figure like President Muhammadu Buhari and hope to defeat him.

“To defeat Buhari will require an exact repeat of what Bola Tinubu and others were able to do with the APC in 2014 by creating a broad platform encompassing the political majority in the country.

“This strong coalition will present a candidate to contest against Buhari with the hope of being able to win.”

The former aide to Obasanjo explained that the CNM believed that the APC government, led by Buhari, had not done well since it took over power about three years ago.

“We recognise the fact that the APC has not done well. We are convinced that the decision by Buhari to contest again will not augur well for the country. To allow the APC to win means Buhari will continue and that would not be in the interest of Nigerians,” he added.

Buhari Reveals Why He Decided To Contest For 2nd Tenure

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that the driving force for seeking public office should be to serve the people, improve their lives and not for frivolity or personal ambition.

“I am not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth, I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference to lives of our people.”

This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.

The statement said that Buhari made this known at the All Progressives Party’s (APC) Ward Congress held at Bayagida Model Primary School, Daura, Katsina State on Saturday.

The president also maintained that the passion to serve and see real changes in the lives of Nigerians informed his choice to join partisan politics in the first place.

He said the zeal inspired him to contest elections in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

Buhari said that his decision to seek a second term in office was borne out of a deep passion to serve Nigerians, and not for personal gains.

He noted that his administration had already started the process of ensuring fairness, justice and equity, in spite of challenges, and would work hard to consolidate on the gains.

“After my retirement from the army, or forceful retirement, I sat back and watched as events unfolded on the political turf, and realised the country needed an intervention for fairness, justice and inclusion of Nigerians in the issues that affect their lives,’’ he added.

The President called for patience, maturity and orderliness as the 2019 elections’ calendar begins to unfold.

He urged political parties, candidates and the electorate to put the country first and always remember that “victory ultimately belongs to God.’’

He said: “After going to the court so many times to challenge results of elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011, and going up to the Supreme Court, I concluded that ultimately it is God who determines who will win elections, and in 2015 I got here.’’

In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina state said the process of electing the leaders of the party at the ward level was hitch-free, orderly and based on the constitution of the APC.

“What we have here are our leaders that were chosen based on consensus and we are happy that it reflects the will of the people and the APC constitution.

“We followed the process to also ensure that there is affirmation,’’ he said.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Ward Congress, who is also the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq urged the party leaders to remain loyal and live up to expectations.

APC Congresses Marred By Crisis: Aspirant Stabbed To Death

There was panic in some of the states where the rulling APC held its congress at the weekend.

A chairmanship aspirant in Delta State was stabbed to death moment before the exercise got under way.

Pockets of violence were also recorded in Imo State, Oyo State, Ajegunle and Isolo both in Lagos.

The Ajegunle violence claimed one life.

Killed in Delta was Jeremiah Oghoveta, who had declared his interest to lead the party in Jeremi 3, Ughelli South ward 10.

He was knifed to death allegedly by one Tete in the heat of an argument over the hijack of electoral materials by a side involved in the process.

The Nation gathered that Oghoveta had protested over the alleged hijack of the materials.

But as he made to leave the scene after making his point, his assailant pounced on him, stabbing him on the neck

Oghoveta died on the spot while the Tete fled.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Andrew Aniamaka (DSP), confirmed the incident.

He said investigation into the matter was in progress and the police were on the trail of the suspect.

The APC leader in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, said the exercise was generally peaceful in other parts of the state.

He said APC was poised to entrench the principle of internal democracy in order to have a stronger party that could take over the state in 2019.

Leader of the party in Ovu ward, Ethiope East local government area, Chief Frank Kokori said the process went well.

Kokori who said the party is waxing stronger in the state, explained that the congresses being held across the country is a preparation awaiting the main election coming up next year 2019.

The process was also generally peaceful in Aniocha South Local Government Area was peaceful, although there were few wards where parallel congresses were held.

Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and chieftain of the APC, Mr. Victor Ochei said the congress was conducted without rancour, and praised the adoption of the option A4 adopted for the exercise.

Controversy trails APC congress in Imo.

The ward congress in Imo State yesterday was marred by violence and other skirmishes.

Party faithful waited endlessly in their respective wards for the congress to commence.

Supporters of the different stakeholders, especially governorship aspirants clashed.

The state secretariat of the party where the Congress Committee was billed to address the party stakeholders before the commencement of the exercise was vandalized by thugs who invaded the premises with dangerous weapons.

Some of the party officials who were waiting at the secretariat, were beaten up by the rampaging hoodlums.

The attack was preceded by the redeployment of the Congress Committee for the state to Anambra State.

The APC National Organizing Secretary, Osita Izunaso, said the development was at the instance of the national secretariat of the party.

He said: “There is no problem whatsoever, the only thing is that the national secretariat has directed the Imo Committee to go to Anambra and Anambra Committee to go to Imo and it is an internal matter of the party.

“We are brothers and we don’t have any problem. The party can decide to do anything at any point in time so long as it is in the interest of the party.”

The Secretary of the APC Convention Committee and Senator representing Imo North, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, alleged that Governor Rochas Okorocha had wanted to stop the congress from taking place

“There is every attempt by the governor to stop the congress for fear of what will happen but we are going ahead to hold the primary,” Uwajumogu claimed.

A fresh round of confusion broke out when it was discovered that sensitive materials meant for the congress were missing.

Some of the party stakeholders loyal to the governor insisted that the congress would not continue without the sensitive materials.

Angry party members stormed the house of the National Organizing secretary in search of the sensitive materials.

Prior to that, the Convention Committee members were whisked to the State Police Headquarters from the Government House on the directive of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike.

The congress eventually kicked off in the Wards across the state at about 3pm, while the Committee members and some of the major the stakeholders remained in the office of the Commissioner of Police up to press time.

Hoodlums kill APC member in Ajegunle congress

A man was yesterday killed during the ward congress of the APC at Ajegunle in Ifelodun Local Council Development Area.

The victim, who was injured on the head, died on the way to the hospital.

An eyewitness said he was attacked by thugs sponsored by a politician in the area.

A video recording of the incident showed the victim lying on ground in a pool of blood.

A man beckoned on the people around to take him to the hospital.

Another man brought his Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) to assist the victim.

The victim was carried into the vehicle, and he drove away.

Violence at Isolo.

Similar confusion erupted at the ward in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Some party members alleged that ballot materials were in circulation.

Hoodlums, wielding guns, knives, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, soon hijacked the exercise and descended on delegates many of whom were left injured.

The party secretariat situated at Onawale Street, Isolo was vandalized by the hoodlums and congress officials chased out of the building.

US House of Reps members sleep in their offices to save money

An increasing number of US Congress members have turned into professional squatters at night, sleeping in their Capitol Hill offices to save some money during the work week.

And they are blaming decade-long stagnant salaries and Washington’s steep cost of living for their ordeal.

“Washington is too expensive,”

said Rep. Dan Donovan (Republican-Staten Island), who credits the cot that he sleeps on in a tiny alcove in his office as the reason he is able to serve in Congress while still paying his New York City housing costs.

“If we go to the point where you have to rent or have to buy [in DC], then only millionaires would be members of Congress,” he said. “I don’t think that was the intent of our Founding Fathers.”

Many of them previously got extra compensation, or a per diem, when they served in their home-state legislatures to cover their living expenses while at the state capitol.

But as members of the House, U.S. reps receive a salary of $174,000 a year a figure that hasn’t increased in nearly a decade and no housing allowance, while working in a city where a sparse one-bedroom pad can start at $2,000 a month. Meanwhile, they also have to pay to maintain a residence in their home state.

Members of the Senate seem to fare better, if only because they rake in nearly $20,000 more a year, or $193,400. There are few if any known examples of senators bunking down in their offices overnight.
