Deadly armed men, in the early hours of Monday 1st January 2018, killed a husband, his wife, five children and eight other worshippers who were returning from the crossover service on New Year Day in Omoku, Rivers State.
52 injured victims of the attack are currently receiving treatment in different hospitals in the state.
The bodies of the 15 victims were still at the pavilion of the local government secretariat in Omoku, with their relatives and friends making efforts to identify them and recover the bodies for burial.
The gunmen were suspected to be militants working for a notorious kidnapper-cum militant, Mr. Igwedibia Johnson, aka Don Waney, who is on the run, following raid on his camp and shrines in the early hours of November 20, 2017, soldiers from 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt.
When contacted on the incident, spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), told The Nation that he has not been briefed on the incident.
